Choosing a tournament bracket app

A bracket app should make the next match clear and let an organizer repair a wrong result. Test those two tasks before comparing themes or scoreboard layouts.

Challonge documents several bracket formats, including single and double elimination. It is a reasonable candidate when your main job is organizing match winners across different games. Confirm sport-specific scoring separately.

Try eight teams, then seven

Create eight teams and seed them in a known order. In a conventional seeded eight-team draw, the opening matches are 1–8, 4–5, 3–6, and 2–7. Check the actual draw; an event can choose a different seeding method.

Now remove one team. Find the bye, check who advances, and confirm that the software doesn’t record an unplayed bye as a played match in your reports.

Trial What you need to see
Change a seed before play The intended opening matchups
Correct an opening winner A clear effect on later assignments
Withdraw a team A documented advancement or forfeit

Export results Names, opponents, and accepted outcomes

Double elimination

Ask whether the championship can require a reset match. In a full double-elimination event, the unbeaten finalist can lose once and still have only one loss. If your local event uses a single championship instead, publish that exception before registration.

Try a result that would trigger the reset. Confirm which match appears next and whether your schedule has room for it. Our match-count guide shows how the extra final affects planning.

Assign someone to run it

Keep one person responsible for accepted results, even if players submit them. Share the rules for disputes and corrections. Save a copy of the draw and roster before the event starts.

If the event also needs court assignments, entry payments, or individual bag stats, list those separately. Supporting a bracket format doesn’t prove the app handles the rest of your event.
